What is an EGD?
EGD is upper endoscopy. A flexible camera examines the esophagus, stomach, and first part of the small intestine.
Why would I need upper endoscopy?
Common reasons include reflux, trouble swallowing, anemia, bleeding, nausea, pain, vomiting, or follow-up of known conditions.
Does EGD hurt?
Most patients receive sedation and do not experience significant pain. A mild sore throat or bloating can occur afterward.
How long does recovery take?
Most patients recover from sedation over several hours and resume usual activities the next day, following their discharge instructions.
Can EGD diagnose GERD or Barrett's esophagus?
EGD can identify inflammation, narrowing, ulcers, and changes suspicious for Barrett's esophagus. Biopsies may be needed.
Can biopsies be taken during EGD?
Yes. Small tissue samples can be taken for pathology, often without the patient feeling it.
How do I prepare for EGD?
You will need to stop eating and drinking for the instructed period and review medications with the care team.
Can EGD treat problems too?
Selected problems can be treated during endoscopy, such as dilation of a narrowing or control of certain bleeding sources.
What are EGD risks?
Risks are uncommon but include bleeding, perforation, aspiration, medication reactions, and missed lesions.
Can I drive after EGD?
No. Arrange an adult driver and avoid driving, alcohol, and important decisions for 24 hours after sedation.
What is dysphagia?
Dysphagia means difficulty swallowing. EGD may help identify inflammation, narrowing, a ring, or another cause.
Can EGD find ulcers?
Yes. EGD can directly identify stomach or duodenal ulcers and allow biopsy when appropriate.
Will insurance cover EGD?
Coverage depends on symptoms, medical necessity, plan rules, network status, and authorization. Confirm benefits before scheduling.
When should I call after EGD?
Call for severe pain, fever, persistent vomiting, breathing difficulty, black stools, or significant bleeding. Call 911 for emergencies.
Can I request direct access EGD?
Some patients may qualify after physician chart review. Higher-risk conditions or complex symptoms may require an office visit first.
